Indian Conference On Life Cycle Management 2019 at Gujarat Forest Research Training Institute (GFRTI)
With Sustainability among one of the top ten emerging issues in developing countries, the critical question of how to ensure more sustainable business practices in the future calls for cogitation. Life cycle approach (LCA) is one such business management approach that can be used by any industry/organization to improve overall sustainability performance across the value chain.
Since the subject requires capacity building and awareness creation across varied sectors, with the same imperative of mainstreaming Life cycle knowledge in India, a two-day conference was co-organized by Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) and Gujarat Forest Research Foundation (GFRF) and at the Conference hall of the Gujarat Forest Research Training Institute (GFRTI) with an aim to bring together Indian and International LCA community, stakeholders including government, industry, and academia.
The inaugural session witnessed , Dr. D.K. Sharma, IFS, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (PCCF) & Head of Forest Force (HoFF), Gujarat State; Dr. Sanjiv Tyagi, Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Research & Training, Gujarat State, Dr. Ashok Menon, Global Technology Leader, SABIC Technology Centre, Dr. Martijn Gipmans, Team Lead – Chemicals & Life Science, thinkstep AG and Mr. Mritunjay Kumar, Additional Director & Head- FICCI Quality Forum on the dais.
Dr. Tyagi spoke about the importance of LCA in forestry and Ecosystem and the importance to move towards adoption of the concept of Lifecycle to cope up with the current condition of climate change. He also added, “It is time to re-look at the older concepts in order to achieve sustainability and help the planet.”
Dr. D.K. Sharma talked about the limited resources on the planet and suggested that it is better think and act sustainably. He also understated the fact that the approach should be re-looked at, and the strategy should be shifted from Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) to Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach. Dr. Menon underlined the importance of Collaboration amongst all stakeholders at all levels in order to move towards more informed choices – Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas!
Special session on Application of LCA Datasets and LCA in forestry was organized by NEERI and GFRF respectively. The conference was attended by over 150 participates including international delegates, industry academia, research institutes and government departments and various cadre of officers from forest department, Gujarat.
The two-day conference will deliberate on the issues including how LCA can be used as a catalyst to achieve Circular Economy, as an enabler for business practices, will discuss various case studies across globe and approach towards adopting LCT into policy making to transform India’s Landscape.
