First qualification systems for LA28 approved

10 December 2025 – The first set of qualification systems for the LA28 Olympic Games has been approved by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board (EB), marking a key milestone on the road to the next edition of the Games.

Qualification systems for 26 sports and disciplines were presented and approved during today’s meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland, with the remaining systems to be submitted to the IOC EB in early 2026. All systems have been developed in line with the Qualification System Principles (QSP) approved by the IOC EB in March 2025.

Each International Federation (IF) is responsible for establishing its sports rules for participation in the Olympic Games, including qualification criteria in accordance with the Olympic Charter. Such criteria must be submitted to the IOC EB for approval.

For most of the sports and disciplines presented today, the systems are based on the successful, well-established pathways in place for Paris 2024 and previous Olympic Games. Recommendations from the Paris 2024 debrief process – conducted with National Olympic Committees (NOCs), IFs, the IOC and other stakeholders – have been applied where feasible.

The LA28 qualification systems ensure athletes have at least two opportunities to qualify, maintain continental and universal representation, and aim to minimise travel demands. This decision on the qualification systems for LA28 has been taken earlier by the IOC EB compared to previous editions of the Games, thus providing NOCs, athletes and entourage members with earlier visibility and longer timelines to prepare for their participation in the LA28 Olympic Games.
