LEUVEN, BELGIUM – Green NCAP has announced the Top Category Winners – the ‘greenest’ cars in their categories – for 2024.
Green NCAP is an independent initiative of Euro NCAP which promotes the development of cars that are clean, energy-efficient, and cause as little harm to the environment as possible.
In 2024, eight cars from China, France, Germany, Japan, and the US set the green standard, revealing the potential of vehicles to minimise environmental impact in relation to their emissions and road performance.
The 2024 Category Winners include: the newcomer BYD DOLPHIN Design Electric, the Honda Civic 2.0 i-MMD e:HEV Hybrid, the Hyundai IONIQ 6 First Edition Electric and KONA Electric, the Jeep Avenger Summit Electric, the Opel/Vauxhall Corsa Electric, Peugeot 308 1.5 BlueHDI Diesel and, VW Taigo 1.0 TSI Petrol.
Hyundai impresses with two of its vehicles included in the line-up of top performers.
The Opel/Vauxhall Corsa, from the Supermini and City Car category, takes the accolade for Best-Performing Full Electric Car and is the highest overall achiever in 2024.
Electric vehicles tend to dominate the awards. However, Green NCAP has awarded Category Winners to Hybrid, Diesel, and Petrol cars. These may have lower star ratings but are still effective in reducing their emissions and improving their efficiency.
The Peugeot 308 takes the top spot in the diesel category. The greenest petrol car is the VW Taigo and the most environmentally effective hybrid car is the Honda Civic.
We hope that today’s results will help buyers make clearer decisions concerning the environmental impact of a wide range of cars available on the market in 2024. Green NCAP understands that it is not only the environmental attributes that attract buyers to greener or electric but also their kudos, driving performance, and power. Whilst testing, we also saw different attributes that are of interest to consumers. In Green NCAP’s new rating to be released later this year, all stages of testing will include a Life Cycle Assessment, and we will offer information about vehicles’ different charging behaviour and capabilities, cold weather performance, driving range, and more details on energy efficiency. We know this will improve the quality and understanding of the real value of electric cars. – Aleksandar Damyanov, Technical Manager Green NCAP

Green NCAP requires a minimum of three cars tested in a specific category. To ensure that all vehicles are evaluated using the same criteria, the Category Winner comparison is conducted exclusively within each calendar year, as the criteria for each star rating progressively become more stringent with time.
To define the Category Winner, a calculation is made of the average value of a vehicle’s score in each of the three indices: Clean Air, Energy Efficiency, and Greenhouse Gases. Equal in significance, each of the three indices accounts for one-third of the average score. The Average Score is given as a percentage and is used as the basis for comparison of the vehicles, where the vehicle with the highest Average Score is the Category Winner.
The rules to become a Category Winner are displayed on the website.
