Historic Bitton Railway Station Hosts Free Vintage Cycling Event

Bitton and Oldland Cycling Club and Avon Valley Railway are delighted to announce a “Grand Vintage Potter” for cyclists as part of the Festival of Transport at Bitton Station, on the 26th and 27th of September 2026

Highlights include exhibitions of vintage cycles and cycling from Penny Farthing Bike Tour Bath, Solent Veteran Bicycle Club and the Veteran-Cycle Club. Along, of course, with several splendiferous heritage railway engines and the sensual delights of some beautiful examples of automobile artistry.

While the festival atmosphere will span the entire weekend, Saturday is set to be the premier day for cycling enthusiasts to gather. The highlight of Saturday’s shenanigans is a dignified, one-hour “spirited potter” starting at 2 pm on Saturday 26th.

Participants will cycle from Bitton Station along the Bristol and Bath Railway Path towards Bath, turning back at Saltford Bridge or at a safe spot of their choosing.

The organisers are expecting a wide variety of “iron steeds,” ranging from historic penny-farthings and Victorian safety bicycles to modern carbon, folding and electric bikes. And, as this is a social parade with an emphasis on coffee and cake consumption not competition, the pace will be leisurely, and participants will be reminded that they join the ride entirely at their own risk.

The event organisers commented:

“What ho! We are inviting all souls of spiffing demeanour to mount their ordinaries, sociables, safeties or what-have-you for a weekend of oojah-cum-spiff jollity amongst the steam and splendour of our superlative station.

A two-day triumph of the first water with absolutely zero rannygazoo—just ensure your plus fours are pressed, boaters are atop bonces and flowers in lapels are looking top-hole!”

Sunday is more for those visitors, exhibitionists and vintage cycle admirers wishing to mingle, chatter and chuckle over suitable refreshment and repast.

Visitors are encouraged to embrace the theme by wearing period-appropriate attire. Rational dress, knickerbockers, bonnets, blazers, capes, and caps, etc are very welcome but not de rigueur.

Tickets are free! Those wishing to join the merriment can find more information and book tickets through the Eventbrite platform
